CONNEAUT
—William “Bull” L. Ely, age 71, of Conneaut, died
peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at his residence with his family at his
side, following a long struggle with diabetes.Bill was born July 7, 1936, in
Conneaut, Ohio, the son of Derwin and Edna (Marker) Ely. Bill attended Conneaut
High School and went on to serve his country as a Paratrooper in the United
States Army with the 325th Tank Company of the 82nd Airborne Division in the
Infantry Reg. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Conneaut to work
at the former Nickel Plate Railroad as a fireman. He went on to work for Al
Divittorio Construction Company and later for the Peerless Sand Company. He
worked at the former Hercules Packing Co. in Conneaut as a Tool and Die maker
and also served as Union President for the plant. Bill also worked as a Tool and
Die maker for the former Transplastics Company in Conneaut. Bill was a member of
the Conneaut Moose Club and a former member of the Knights of Phythius. He loved
racing and was an avid go-cart racer and stock car racer years ago at Raceway 7.
He was very well known for engine and stock car building. Bill liked to golf and
his favorite pastime was making homemade wine. He also enjoyed building homemade
birdhouses and talking to the birds and squirrels. Bill loved to fly and most
recently he was able to pilot a glider airplane in California while on vacation.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Donna Ambrose;
father-in-law, Angelo Zappitelli; brother-in-law, Albert Zappitelli; and a great
niece, Terri Ahles. He is survived by his wife, Marie (Bertone) Ely, whom he
married Oct. 31, 1959, at St. Frances Cabrini Church; a daughter, Carolyn and
Mark Mysza of Garfield Heights; two sons, Greg Ely of Pinnellas Park, Fla., and
Brian and Heather Ely of Flat Rock, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and
Brandon Jones, Jessicca and Danielle Ely, Logan and Michaela Ely and Ashley and
Thomas Mysza; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Xander Jones; brother-in-laws
and sister-in-laws, Nick and Dorothy Zappitelli, Phil and Yvonne Splan, all of
Florida and Anthony and Mary Zappitelli and Barb Zappitelli, all of Conneaut;
nephews, Eddie Trutwin, Nicholas Zappitelli, Joe and Stacy Zappitelli and Mike
and Dawn Zappitelli; and nieces, Tracy Rose and Roseann Angerer; and several
cousins. Bill also leaves behind his mother-in-law, whom he loved very much,
Jennie Zappitelli. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 5,
2008 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, Mill St., Conneaut, with Father Raymond
Thomas officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N.
Kingsville, Ohio, where the American Legion Honor Squad will conduct
Military Rites. Calling Hours will be held on Friday, April 4, 2008, from 2 to 4

CONNEAUT
— Minnie E. Specht, age 97, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, April 1,
2008, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. Born December 21, 1910, in Conneaut,
Ohio, and was the daughter of John and Julia (Hinz) Biscoff, and was a lifelong
Conneaut resident.Mrs. Specht was employed for 26 years, at the former Astatic
Corp., retiring in 1976, and she also was an election poll worker. Mrs. Specht
was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America,
and the East Conneaut Fire Department Auxiliary. While her children were in
school, she was active in the P.T.A. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and being
with people, especially her family. She was also a Cleveland Indians and
Cavaliers fan. Survivors include three sons, John W. (Margaret) Specht of
Conneaut, Ohio, James R. (Carolyn) Specht of Roanoke, Va., and Joseph G.
(Audrey) Specht of Conneaut; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces, nephews, and more distant
relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John A. Specht
in 1967; four sisters, Rosalie Hawley, Verna Dixon, Josephine Scribner, and
Margaret in infancy; two infant brothers, Henry and John; a grandson, Charlie
Fisher; and a great-grandson, Mathew-Shields Specht. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at Noon on Friday, April 4, at St. Mary Church, 480 State
St., Conneaut, OHIO, with Rev. Raymond Thomas, officiating. Burial will be in
St. Joseph Cemetery.Friends may call 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Friday morning, April
4, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut,

Kenneth
J. Lundgren
CONNEAUT — Kenneth J. Lundgren, age 74, of Conneaut, Ohio, entered into rest
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. Born April 9, 1933,
in Graettinger, Iowa, he was the son of N. Edward and Agnes (Pearson) Lundgren,
and graduated in 1951, from Conneaut High School. A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, he
served during the Korean War. He retired in 1989, from General Electric Base
Plant, where he worked in the lamp department. He was a member of the Moose
Lodge and American Legion Cowle Post #151. When his children were young, he was
involved at C.L.Y.O. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians
fan, and enjoyed bowling. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Betty M.
(Hopkins) Lundgren; his son, David (Susan) Lundgren of Concord, Ohio; his
sister, M. Elaine Nelson of Houston, Tex.; his brother, Gary (June) Lundgren of
Ashtabula, Ohio; nine grandchildren, David Lundgren, Jr., John Lundgren, Jr.,
Courtney Lundgren, Kristen Lundgren, Ronald Hope, Christine Hope, Cory Hope,
Hope Pignotti, and Cody Pignotti; step-son; Ronald (Lili) Hope of Tampa, Fla.;
and a step-daughter Pamela Hope of Woodstock, Ga. He was preceded in death by
his parents; his son, John K. Lundgren; and two brothers, Robert and Frank
Lundgren. Private Graveside Services will be in East Conneaut Cemetery, with
full military honors. The Rev. Terry Kern, pastor of East Conneaut Baptist
Chapel, will officiate. There will be no calling hours observed. Memorial

Karen Sue Dawson
CONNEAUT — Karen Sue Dawson, age 52, of Broad St., Conneaut, Ohio, died
Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. Born July 21,
1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was a daughter to the late Edgar and Margaret
(Hitchcock) Wilson, and had lived most of her life in Conneaut. She is survived
by her husband of 35 years Ronald; daughters, Bonnie (Mike) Maehler of Conneaut,
Veronica (Shane) Buckley of Conneaut, and Savannah Pudder of Ashtabula; sons,
Ronald (Suzanne) Dawson, II of Conneaut, Paul (Jessica) Dawson of Ashtabula, and
Andrew Dawson of Ashtabula; three children she raised, Crystal Wilson, Stephanie
Wilson and Richard Steele; 15 grandchildren; four sisters; and five brothers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Joshua. Funeral Services will
be 11 a.m., Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Church of God, St. Rte 7, Monroe Twp.,
Ohio, with Pastor Raymond Lamb officiating. Burial will follow at Gageville
Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m., ,Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Henrietta (Sanny) Leavery, age 81, passed away Tuesday,
April 1, 2008, at Coral Oaks Assisted Living, Palm Harbor, Fla., surrounded by
her family.She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (and Michael) Morelli; her
son, Joseph (and Debra) Leavery; grandchildren, Kelly (and Mark) Griffen, Troy
(and Shannon) Leavery, and Scott Leavery; great-grandchildren, Mark and Ashley
Griffin, Sydnie and Ashlyn Leavery; and one sister, Edith Boyle.She was preceded
in death by her husband, Joseph Leavery; and a brother, Emil Zappitelli.

Twp. — Donald Loyed Bowers, Sr., age 67, of Monroe
Township, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at his home. Born April
19, 1940, in Albion, Pa, he was the son of Donald and Charlotte (Kinney)
Bowers.He was in the National Guard and the Army Reserves, and had been employed
over the years at Emco-Wheaton, Horton Vault Company, and was a school bus
driver, in the Conneaut Area School System, from which he retired in 2002. Most
recently, he had worked part-time as a security guard with Pinkerton Security at
C.W. Ohio.He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and spending time with his family
and friends. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Survivors
include his parents, Donald and Charlotte Bowers of Conneaut, Ohio; his wife,
Judith M. (Richards) Bowers, whom he married March 19, 1960; two daughters,
Becky S. (Jim) Crowl and Adrain M. (Michael) Douglas, all of Conneaut; three
sons, Russell L. (Sandy) Bowers, Sr., Donald L. (Becky) Bowers, Jr., and Brian
D. (Rose) Bowers, all of Conneaut; two sisters, Laura Johnston and Mary J. Lott,
both of Conneaut; his brother Clarence (Shirley) Bowers of Conneaut; 15
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous niece, nephews, and more
distant relatives.He was preceded in death by his son, Miles Bowers in 2006; a
grandson, Joshua Bowers; his nephew, Billy Johnston; father-in-law and
mother-in-law, William and Ruth Albee, Sr.; and his grandparents, Charles and

— Geraldine R. Lott, age 76, of Conneaut, Oho, died
Friday, April 04, 2008, at University Hospital, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Born February 22, 1932, in Conneaut, she was the
daughter of Albert and Flora (George) Wilson.
She had worked as a custodian at St. Mary and St.
Frances Cabrini Churches, and also worked at Quality Cleaners.
She attended the Conneaut Church of God, and the Aglow
women's group. She enjoyed doing plastic crafts, crossword puzzles, and
embroidery. She also enjoyed country and western music, traveling and going to
bluegrass music festivals.
Survivors include, two daughters, Penny (James) Sharles
of San Diego, Calif., Shirley (Earnest) McCumber of Conneaut, Ohio; 12 sons,
Terry (Marlene) Lott of Michigan, Bruce Lott of Jefferson, Ohio, Paul (Charlene)
Lott of Jefferson, Ohio, John (Susan) Lott of Pierpont, Ohio, Scott (Rhonda)
Lott of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Joseph Lott of Cleveland, Ohio, and Earl (Marcia)
Miller, Jack (Judy) Lott, Donald (Beverly) Lott, George Lott, and Michael Lott
all of Conneaut, and Charles Lott of Leavittsburg, Ohio; numerous grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Nading of Ravenna, Ohio, and

MADISON — Mary Jane Spiesman,
passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the home of her friend, in Parrish,
Fla.Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, she lived in Madison (Unionville), Ohio, for over
40 years, prior to moving to Florida.Mary Jane was a cosmetologist for over 20
years, at one time owning Beaut-E-Lane Salon, in Geneva and Perry, prior to
retiring. She also worked many years, assisting the elderly in their homes,
providing for their needs, subsequent to retiring as a cosmetologist.She was a
member of Immaculate Conception Church, in Madison, Ohio, for over 40 years. She
enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing, dining out, and entertaining friends and
family, with her talents for baking, and cooking. She also enjoyed her many
visits to baby-sit her grandchildren. An avid swimmer at the Madison YMCA for
many years, she earned many award patches for swimming hundreds of
miles.Survivors include her children, David Spiesman of Colorado, Debra (Lloyd)
Hartline of Bradenton, Fla., Mary Anna Miller, of Littleton, Colo., and Benjamin
(Patrece) Spiesman of Leroy Twp.; grandchildren, Daniel, Brandon, Victoria,
Lloyd, Brianna, Danielle, Gabriel, Jacob, and Jarrod; sister, Greta Cinciarelli;
brothers, Joseph, Eugene, and Bobby Sandella; and dear friend, William
Wiltrack.She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, David L. Spiesman;

— Carolyn L. “Sue” Rockwell, age 68, went to be with the
Lord on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., following a
long illness. Sue was born March 2, 1940, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of
Andrew D. and Priscilla (Hills) Woodbury. Her family moved in 1940 to St.
Petersburg, Fla., where she attended Boca Ciega High School. She went on to
business college and later worked for the stock market in Hartford, Conn. In
1960, Sue came to the Conneaut area and worked for the former Astatic Co. in the
production, salvage, and repair department; and in the office with Nationwide
Insurance Company, until she became disabled. Sue was a member of St. Mary
Church in Conneaut. She enjoyed playing golf, knitting and the Cleveland Indians
and Browns. She especially enjoyed raising her family, being a good wife was
very important to her. Preceded in death by her parents, Sue is survived by her
husband, James M. Rockwell, whom she married July 28, 1977 at St. Mary Church;
three sons, Scott M. Grice of Correy, Pa., Jim and Dabney Rockwell III of
Windsor, Va., and Trevor and Kim Rockwell of Conneaut; four daughters, Julie
Grice of Lakeland, Fla., Suzanne and John Middleton of Tampa, Fla., Marci and
Russell Werlinich of Dayton, Md., and Staci Marie and Ryan Walsh of Thorton,
Pa.; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew A. Woodbury of Milton, Fla.; step-brother,
Peter Woodbury of Grand Junction, Colo.; a step-sister, Virginia Noot of
Houston, Tex.; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mass of the
Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at St.
Mary Church, State St., Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas as celebrant.

CONNEAUT — Barbara A. Stroeter, age 76, of
Conneaut, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at UH Conneaut Medical Center. Born
June 1, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of George and Atta J.
(Miller) DeFrieze. Mrs. Stroeter lived most of her life in northeast Ohio and
also spent some time in Naples, Fla., where she was employed at Comcast
Communications. She enjoyed spending time at the beach, swimming, gardening,
watching the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers, and bird watching. She had a zest
for life and radiated love for her children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren. She instilled her joy for life, in everyone she
met.Survivors include her daughters, Sandra L. Holcomb of Conneaut, and Mary Jo
Stroeter of LaMesa, Calif.; her son, Richard A. (Rebecca) Stroeter of Naples,
Fla.; eight grandchildren, Kelly Holcomb, Richie Holcomb, Kris (Tiffany)
Holcomb, Stacy Holcomb, Clark P. Stroeter, Courtney R. Stroeter, Justin E.
Stroeter, and Cody J. Stroeter; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor Wells,
Maria Anderson, Chloe Holcomb, and Nyla Holcomb. She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Richard E. Stroeter in 1994; her son, James H.
Stroeter in 2006; her sister, Mary Jane Adams; and her brother, George DeFrieze.
A celebration of her life will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the MARCY
FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with the

Irene Hodgins, former Conneaut, Ohio resident, peacefully passed away on
December 1, 2007, at her home in Aliso Viejo, Calif., where she had resided for
over five years.She was born February 1, 1922, to Leonard and Ethel Lilly.In
Conneaut, June was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and worked
from 1961 to 1974, for Dr. J. A. Ricaurte. Following their retirement, she and
her husband of 61 years, Lev, moved to Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Dana Point,
Calif., to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While in Lake Havasu,
she volunteered at the Lake Havasu Regional Hospital. June is survived by her
daughter, Judi Saczalski and son-in-law Ken of Newport Beach, Calif.; her son,
Bill Hodgins and daughter-in-law Mary Lou of Farmington, N.M.; her sister,
Mildred Polk; five grandchildren, Lauri, Todd, Tracy, Tammy and Billy; 13
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, all residing in Arizona
and Washington State; and a number of nieces, nephews, and more distant
relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lev, in 2001;
her brother, Charles; and her sister, Frances. June will be greatly missed, but
always remembered, as a loving wife, mother, grandchildren, great-grandma, and
great-great-grandma. Graveside services will be 12 noon, Saturday, April 12,
2008, in Center Cemetery, Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Peg Welch,

— Raymond P. Soltis, age 83, of Furnace Road, died
peacefully Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at The Villa at the Lake. Born August 31,
1924, in Monroe Center, Ohio, he was the son to Andrew and Anna (Fobean) Soltis,
and was called was a lifelong resident of the area.He was retired as a Foreman
with Norton Company, and the former Conneaut Rubber and Plastic. Raymond was a
member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and for years enjoyed spending time with
his family at weekly Soltis family gatherings. He also loved Chinese food, yard
work, the outdoors, playing cards, children and traveling after retirement.Mr.
Soltis is survived by brothers, Robert (Shirley) Soltis, of Erie and John (Jane)

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens. Calling hours will be 6
to 8 p.m., Friday, April 11, at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the

CONNEAUT
— Lillian M. Vespe, our beloved mother, age 88, of
Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Villa at the Lake,
where she had resided for the last several years. Born March 2, 1920, in
Ashtabula, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lillian (Mozga)
Tobias. Lillian spent her entire adult life as a devoted wife and mother. She
was a member of St. Mary’s Church, also belonging to Catholic Daughters of
America, the Altar Guild Society, and worked for many years at CLYO Bingo. She
loved her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed the many birthday and
Christmas celebrations. She especially enjoyed making pizza for her
grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and gardener and spent many years
tending to her beautiful flowers. She enjoyed playing bingo, and watching the
Cleveland Indians and golf on TV with her husband. She is survived by two sons,
Joseph (Rebecca) Vespe of Conneaut and Jim (Kathy) of Conneaut and Phoenix,
Ariz.; two daughters, Sandy (Tom) Stewart of Rootstown, Ohio, and Peggy Vespe of
Mechanicsburg, Pa.; sisters, Helen Morales, Virginia Kajikawa of Illinois, and
Emma Ouellette of Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.She was
preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1999; brothers, Frank, Robert, and
Larry Tobias; sisters, Dorothy Morales, Betty Santos, Irene Reyes, and Marge
Alvarado. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday, April 14, 2008 at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will
follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens. Private family viewing will take
place. THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut is handling
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the St. Mary’s
Capital Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

CONNEAUT — Paul R. Taylor Sr., age 72, of
Conneaut, Ohio, died Saturday morning, April 12, 2008.He was born Sept. 4, 1935,
in Westernport, Md., and was the son of William H. and Bessie E. (Custer)
Taylor. A Conneaut resident most of his life, he had served in the U.S. Coast
Guard and Merchant Marines, and was employed at Emco-Wheaton and at Eighmy
Products. Mr. Taylor enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family,
and was a collector of coins, NASCAR memorabilia, baseball cards and vintage die
cast cars. Survivors include four daughters, Cynthia E. Griffith of Greenfield,
Ind., Robin L. Neubauer, Doreen M. Taylor and Holly K. Ekholm, all of Conneaut;
two sons, Paul R. Taylor Jr. of Conneaut and Stephen J. Taylor of Asheboro,
N.C.; three sisters, Mary E. Jenkins of Conneaut, Edith M. Kerns of Westernport,
Md., and Ruth J. Woods of Oakland, Md.; a brother, James "Buddy" Taylor of
Bloomington, Md.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a grandchild on
the way; and two great-grandchildren on the way. He is preceded in death by his
parents and his brother, William "David" Taylor. Family and close friends are
welcome to attend a gathering 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2008, at the MARCY
FAMILY CENTER, 180 Harbor St., Conneaut. Memorial contributions may be made to
